SUMI INK STICK - Traditional Japanese Ink for Sumi Illustrations

In Sumi-e the artist grinds her own ink using an ink stick and a grinding stone. Ink sticks are generally made of densely packed ash from Asian pine trees and a little glue. The artist puts a few drops of water on the ink stone and grinds the ink stick in a circular motion until a smooth black ink is made of the desired concentration.

An inkstone is a stone mortar for the grinding and containment of ink.

SUMI-E is the Japanese word for Black Ink Painting. East Asian Painting and writing developed together in ancient China using the same materials — brush and ink on paper. Emphasis is placed on the beauty of each individual stroke of the brush. The Chinese speak of “writing a painting” and “painting a poem.”
